Prof. Dr. A. Lakshminath,

Pro-Chancellor/Vice-Chancellor, Chanakya National Law University

Prof. A. Lakshminath is a rare combination of an erudite scholar, an astute administrator, a relentless researcher and a revered teacher in the legal community. For the past 46 years, he has with single-minded devotion strived to serve the academia in law in multiple capacities across the country. Currently, as Pro-Chancellor emeritus and founder Vice-Chancellor, Chanakya National Law University, he has rendered selfless service to the field of legal education by setting up the University in Patna that competes with 15 other National Law Schools as centre of excellence in legal education. He has been teaching law since the year 1967 to thousands of students who went on to become eminent lawyers, jurists, public figures, judges and academicians. Till date he has guided more than 500 LL. M. dissertations, 355 project reports, 77 Ph.D. and 3 LL. D. degrees in Law which is a RECORD by itself. He has authored 10 Books and 120 Articles in reputed Journals.

Prof. Lakshminath has served the cause of legal education in almost all parts of the country and the backward regions of the country in particular. Having started his teaching career in Nagpur University and later as its Dean of Faculty of Law, he taught at the Andhra University, Visakhapatnam and became the Principal of Andhra University Law College and was appointed Professor-Registrar and Dean, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad before finally shifting to Bihar to lay the foundation for the Chanakya National Law University. He has imparted education to the students of the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra and then moved to cater the needs of the students of Telangana Region of Andhra Pradesh and now in Bihar, all the said regions had been backward in education and other concerns. His thirst to reach the unreachable of the society continues and it has been given due recognition. The Government of Bihar in a rare gesture amended the University Act to facilitate the utilization of his services beyond Seventy years. In yet another rare gesture the Government of Andhra Pradesh has reappointed him as Chancellor of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University of Andhra Pradesh. In between these major innings, he continued to enrich himself and the legal community – nationally and internationally. He was Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Massachusetts, U.S.A., Fellow of Salzburg Seminar, Austria and Visiting Professor at Banaras Hindu University amongst many other universities and institutions. He has participated in more than 150 national and international seminars and symposia and has either presided over or delivered key-note addresses in more than 120 academic meets in India and across the globe including USA, UK, Japan and Europe.

Prof. A. Lakshminath has contributed immensely to the clinical legal education by spreading legal awareness and organising Legal Aid Camps amongst the masses especially amongst the underprivileged and marginalised sections of the society. Till date he has organised several legal aid camps and legal literacy programmes at various levels and in various regions of the country including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. As Project Director for the NHRC’s Human Rights literacy programmes got published books on Human Rights that are available in four Southern languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. As a Senior Consultant to the Andhra Pradesh Government he successfully completed projects on Judicial Process and good governance. As Director of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) he organised several sensitisation programs on Environmental awareness in remote, far off and inaccessible areas.

Prof. A. Lakshminath has relentlessly worked towards promoting socio-cultural understanding and integration by heading voluntary organisations for the cause of communal harmony, linguistic minorities and consumer rights. He was President of Cultural Associations and Cooperative Housing Society, Vice-President of Hindu Muslim Welfare Association in Maharashtra and Consumer and Environmental Forums in Andhra Pradesh. He was visiting Professor in reputed Institutions like National Fire Service College, Nagpur, L. B. S. National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie etc. He was the founder Director of Department of Legal Studies in Dr. Ambedkar College, Diskha Bhoomi, Nagpur.

Recipient of many awards and honours, Prof. A. Lakshminath has been recently conferred with Prof N. R. Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award 2012 for SAARC countries for his long and distinguished services to the legal education and legal profession, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Education Award in 2008 and Lifetime Achievement award by International Educators for World Peace, Alabama USA in 2007. It is very appropriate to quote Padmashri Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon, “There are very few legal academics still serving the cause of legal education with the devotion and commitment credited to Prof. Lakshminath. As a teacher he excels in class and is admired by students for clarity of expression and depth of learning. As a colleague, law teachers take him as an elder brother who can be approached for help in resolving difficult legal problems. He has become an institution by himself.”

Prof. A. Lakshminath is currently serving as a Member, Bihar State Law Commission and Member, Accreditation Committee of Legal Education and to Directorate of Legal Education of the Bar Council of India. He is a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Law Institute and a past Governor on the Board of Governors of Doon School, Dehradun.
